Butter My Jam ("we", "our", or "the app") is a real-time collaborative music queue application that allows users to create and join rooms, search for YouTube videos, and control shared playback. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights with respect to that information.

1. YouTube Integration

Butter My Jam integrates with YouTube to enable video search and metadata retrieval. By using this app, you agree to be bound by the YouTube Terms of Service. Our use of YouTube services is also governed by the Google Privacy Policy.

Video search results are retrieved from YouTube's publicly accessible web interface on your behalf by our server. Video and playlist metadata (title, channel name, duration, thumbnail) is fetched using the YouTube Data API v3. We do not download, store, cache, or proxy any audio or video content. Playback is provided exclusively through the official YouTube IFrame Player API embedded within the app.

You can revoke our app's access to YouTube API data at any time via the Google Security Settings page.

2. Information We Collect

a) Locally Stored Data

When you join or create a room, we generate an anonymous random identifier and store it in your browser's localStorage along with your chosen nickname. This data never leaves your device except to identify your session within a room.

b) Room & Queue Data

Room names, invite codes, queue items (YouTube video IDs and associated metadata), and playback state are stored in Google Firebase Firestore. This data is associated with room sessions and is not linked to any personal identity.

Queue items contain only: YouTube video ID, title, channel name, thumbnail URL, duration (in seconds), and the nickname of who added the song. We do not store any audio or video file data.

c) Search Queries

When you search for a video, your search query is sent to our server, which retrieves results from YouTube on your behalf. Search queries are not logged or stored beyond the duration of the request.

d) Usage Data

We do not use analytics tools or tracking scripts. We do not collect IP addresses, device identifiers, or any personally identifiable information beyond the nickname you choose to provide.

3. How We Use Information

  • To enable real-time collaborative music queuing within a room session.
  • To search YouTube for videos using your search queries.
  • To display video metadata (title, thumbnail, duration) for search results and queued items.
  • To synchronise playback state (play, pause, seek, volume) across devices in a room.

We do not sell, rent, or share your information with third parties for marketing purposes.

4. Data Retention

Room data (queue, members, playback state) is retained in Firebase Firestore until manually deleted. Locally stored identifiers (your member ID and nickname) remain in your browser until you clear your browser storage.

Butter My Jam is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the app, please contact us to have it removed.

7. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
