Frequently asked questions

Everything about running a shared music queue with Butter My Jam. New to it? Start with how it works.

How do I let guests request songs at a party?

Create a room on the host device that is connected to your speakers, then share the six-character room code or let guests scan the room QR code. Anyone who joins can search for songs and add them to the shared queue from their own phone.

Does everyone need an account to add songs?

No. There are no accounts and no sign-ups. Guests pick a nickname when they join, which is stored only in their own browser.

Is Butter My Jam free?

Yes, it is completely free to create rooms, join rooms, and queue songs. There is no paid tier and no trial.

Do guests need to install an app?

No. Butter My Jam runs in any modern mobile or desktop browser. It can optionally be installed as a progressive web app from the browser menu, but that is never required.

Which device plays the music?

Playback runs on the host device — the one that created the room. Connect that device to your speakers or TV, and every guest controls the queue remotely without audio playing on their own phones.

Can I stop guests from skipping or pausing the music?

Yes. Choose "Host controls" when you create the room. Guests can still add songs, but only you and the admins you promote can control playback and manage the queue. Rooms created with "Everyone controls" give all guests full queue and playback control.

Can I make a private room?

Yes. Toggle the room to Private when creating it and set a password. Guests then need both the room code and the password to get in.

How do people join with a QR code?

Every room shows a QR code on the host screen. Guests point their phone camera at it and the room opens directly in their browser — no code typing, no app install.

Can we watch YouTube videos together in sync?

Yes. Playback position is synced in real time across every device in the room, so people in different households can watch or listen to the same video at the same moment.

How many people can join one room?

Rooms are designed for typical party and watch-party sizes — a handful of guests up to a full room of people all queueing from their phones.

What music can we play?

Songs and videos available on YouTube. You can search by title or artist, paste a YouTube link, or paste a YouTube playlist link to pull in multiple tracks at once.

What is the AI DJ?

The AI DJ suggests what to play next based on the songs already in your queue, so the music keeps going when nobody is adding requests. Suggestions go into the same shared queue, and you can ignore or remove them.

How long does a room last?

Rooms are meant to last for the length of a session. Keep the host device on the room page while the party is running; leaving the page ends playback for everyone.

Can I use it at a bar, restaurant, or wedding?

Butter My Jam works well for events, but commercial and public-venue playback carries its own licensing obligations. Review the Terms of Service and confirm you have the rights required for your venue before using it commercially.
